Apparently he was one of the best-paid painters in Paris in his day, then fell out of favor completely once Impressionism took hold — he didn't come back into fashion until decades later.
Fallen angel by Alexandre Cabanel, 1847
This is supposed to be Lucifer, watching the other angels head up to heaven without him. Cabanel was apparently in his mid-twenties when he painted it, and it's the piece that got him noticed.
