He was sick to death of painting rich people's portraits by then, and spent his holidays doing pictures like this instead — no commission, no sitter, just whatever patch of ground happened to be in front of him.
Erisava: It's just brambles. Did he turn his back on the view on purpose?

This one's apparently a quick gift sketch for a friend, painted during a stay on Capri - the model was well known locally and sat for plenty of other visiting painters too.
Erisava: Her face is finished, but the rest of the canvas barely got started.
