It's a war memorial, apparently — a rooster on a brick column at the edge of a tiny Frisian village, with the names on a plaque partway up. I couldn't find why they chose a rooster of all things; if anyone knows the story, I'd love to hear it.
Erisava: Is a rooster a strange thing to put this high up, or am I missing something?

According to what I found, he only managed to paint full-time after winning something like 100,000 francs in a state lottery — before that it was a government day job on the side. He kept coming back to this same river valley for years, apparently, enough that people credit him with putting it on the map.

He apparently gave up a business career around 1890 to paint full-time and fell in with Gauguin's crowd in Brittany — though you'd never guess that from a quiet river scene like this one.
