He apparently spent most of his life painting one stretch of the IJssel around Hattem — same water, same skies, over and over. And cows in a wet field is about as standard a Dutch subject as there is; they say buyers have wanted that exact view since the 1600s.
Erisava: Cows in a peaceful field. Somebody bought this, and it ended up in a museum.

It's watercolour on paper rather than a painting in oils, which explains how thin it all looks. He earned his living engraving other people's designs and sold almost nothing of his own while he was alive. The scene's out of A Midsummer Night's Dream, from what I can tell.
Erisava: This is barely coloured in and I'd still hang it. Looks like weak moonlight.

A zanderij is a sand pit — apparently whole stretches of dune were dug out by hand and carted off, for building sand and for flattening ground. They say the painters he ran with went in for exactly this: people doing hard work outdoors, put down fast and wet rather than tidied up afterwards.
Erisava: Half of this is blank paper. Is that a finished picture or a warm-up?
