Women in the Garden by Claude Monet, 1866
Monet reportedly dug a trench in the garden so he could lower a huge canvas down and keep painting the top half without moving it — his soon-to-be wife modeled for all four women, apparently.
Erisava: This green looks cool enough to walk into.
Madame de Pompadour by François Boucher, 1759
This was the last in a run of seven portraits the same painter made of her over the years. It hung at Versailles first, then apparently passed down to her brother.
Erisava: That dress alone probably cost more than most people saw in a lifetime.
Portrait of a Young Man by Hans Holbein the Younger, 1520
I couldn't find who this is — no name attached, just 'young man,' which feels like it should bother more people than it does.
Erisava: He's clearly not interested in whoever's painting him.
Portrait of Marchesa Brigida Spinola-Doria by Peter Paul Rubens, 1606
This was painted just after her wedding — the Spinola and Doria families were about as prominent as Genoa got, so a portrait like this was as much a statement about the marriage as about her. Apparently the canvas has been trimmed down more than once over the centuries, losing a garden in the background and part of her lower half in the process.
