The Denial of Saint Peter by Caravaggio, 1610
Metropolitan Museum of Art · wikidata.org
Public domain
From what I can find, this was painted while he was still wanted for killing a man years earlier, waiting on a pardon that never came in time — some people who write about this see Peter's denial as an odd echo of his own situation, though that's speculation, not something he ever said himself.
Erisava: What could he have just said, to get looked at like that?
Daniel in the Lions' Den by Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1907
Los Angeles County Museum of Art · wikidata.org

He moved to Paris partly to get away from how Black artists got treated back home, and this moody, almost colorless lighting became the thing he was known for there.
Erisava: Very depressing.
The Seven Works of Mercy by Caravaggio, 1600
Pio Monte della Misericordia · wikidata.org
Public domain
This was commissioned for a Naples charity that apparently still exists today, and instead of splitting the seven acts of mercy into separate scenes like usual, all seven got crammed into one dark room.
Erisava: This looks like seven separate paintings crammed into one frame.
