The Coming Storm by George Bellows, 1916
Bellows made his name painting boxing matches and packed city crowds — this coastal storm is a quieter side of him, painted during a summer away from all that.

The Open Window by Henri Matisse, 1905
This is said to have been part of the infamous exhibition nicknamed the cage of wild beasts by a critic who couldn't believe the color — the name stuck to the whole group of painters.
Erisava: That's an awful lot of colour for one small window.

Harbor Scene by Frank-Will, 1900
Apparently the teacher who trained him said he wasn't much good with people, so he got steered toward outdoor scenes instead — and it stuck. Harbor scenes like this one, all soft grey tones, became something of a specialty for a while.
Erisava: Feels like the kind of painting every seaside town has a version of.

Supposedly he painted the sea from memory indoors rather than out in front of it, and turned out thousands over a lifetime — storms and wrecks by the dozen, selling about as fast as he could make them.
Erisava: Everything's gone the same murky yellow — the sea, the sky, the lot of it.
