Sounds like Thayer painted himself over and over across his life, and people who've studied the set say the later ones get noticeably darker in mood as he got older. This one's supposedly one of the milder ones.

Apparently the man in the suit is Eakins's own brother-in-law, painted late in his career as one of a handful of life-size standing portraits he made around then.
