He trained in Paris alongside the modern crowd, and apparently the woman he later married went on to run one of the big New York galleries that sold this whole generation of American painters. This one came out of time spent in Spain.

It was made to order, from what I've read — he put the idea to the new government himself once the French had been pushed back out of Madrid, and got it paid for. There's a companion picture the same size showing the day before, when the fighting started.
Erisava: That lantern is the only light in the whole thing, and it's aimed like a spotlight.

He's known for beaches and sunlight, so a hillside of grey-brown rock was a surprise to me. Apparently he worked outdoors fast, getting a whole canvas down in one sitting, and left behind stacks of studies like this alongside the big paid-for pictures.
Erisava: It says castle. I can see the corner of one and then it's all rocks.
